What If There Is No Collusion?

While I do believe there was some sort of cooperation between Trump's campaign and the Ruskis, and that they do have dirt on him, I'm not sure we'll get the smoking gun everyone is hoping for. I am, however, quite intrigued about all the other shit Mueller is going to dig up while he's at it. To give but one example, the stalled Trump Tower in Azerbaijan is almost certainly being used to launder money, and probably that of Iran's Revolutionary Guard no less. That sounds like it should be an insane and ungrounded conspiracy theory, but it's not. What a time to be alive!

If Trump did not collude then why is he acting guilty?

It's a good question--but a pretty weak argument.

One thing to keep in mind is that Trump very likely does not know whether he colluded. He delivers long, meandering, internally inconsistent instructions to his subordinates. His recollection of basic what-happened-when facts is shaky at best. He literally does not understand the meaning of the word "collude" as used in this context. He does not understand the law and genuinely believes that prosecution is just something that prosecutors do to attack their enemies. He thinks that victory in legal processes is entirely based on the quality of the attorneys. He simply doesn't know whether he is guilty or innocent, and his belief that he "is innocent" amounts to little more that believing that he is powerful and popular. Sure, he acts guilty and may very well be, but he would act guilty regardless.

Even the perp in one of the old Columbo movies knew enough to pretend to be innocent. “If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.”

William of Ockham would like to have a word with you, Winston.
