Off-topic, but

suck it, WS

The reason I was upset about this was that it's just not true that news outlets like the NYT will run a front-page headline on the basis of something they 'heard through the anti-Trump grapevine'. I repeat that if this were at all common, you would have had no trouble supplying other examples, which you declined to do, implying it was an unreasonable request. Which it was not. (I reiterate it here.)

The reason I was especially upset is that until recently, no-one outside the right-wing fever swamps would have suggested that the NYT ran a front-page story on the basis of something they 'heard through the anti-Trump grapevine' without indicating an awareness that this was a bombshell allegation that struck at the foundation of the NYT's credibility. No-one would have made such an allegation casually. That you did make it casually seems to me a consequence of the massive well-poisoning effect of Trump's 'fake news' attacks on the media, many in connection with stories that (like this one) turned out to be manifestly true.

Like I said, I know the NYT is biased, sometimes horrendously so. But we don't yet have anything like reason to believe that their news operation is anywhere near as corrupt as it would have to be for a casual charge of front-page mendacity to be appropriate.

Oh, God, not the twin-banner-headline argument again...

Jedburgh's right *one time,* and it had to be that?
