Sparrow Shot for Knocking Over Dominoes

That's literally true, incidentally, it wasn't a bird-bandit/pizza delivery boy incident.

Somebody please tell me what on Earth I'm supposed to make of this. I just sat there with my jaw hanging open for awhile. There's pretty much nothing but nuttiness in this story no matter how you look at it.

Is a house sparrow really an endangered species in the Netherlands? I find that hard to believe. Perhaps the species was misidentified.

What to make of the story? 1) It's a slow news day. 2) Human beings have a great deal of liesure time. 3) The relative value of a (possibly rare) bird's life and the fruits of the self-indulgent months of labor of some number of people is not really worthy of the Philosoraptor's attention.

OT -- thanks for looking into the white phosphorous issue and posting on it.

No, seriously, this story makes my brain freeze up. I can't quit thinking about it.

I read it as a bunch of people panicked and over-reacted. They were more worried about their world record than trying to think through the problem rationally.

I remember something similar when working in food service. A bat flew into the warehouse (or was living there) and all hell broke loose. Half a dozen people started chasing the thing with the intention of killing it (not a net in the bunch) - fortunately the bat escaped. I didn't chase the bat but didn't do anything to stop them either. In hindsite I now probably would try to stop them.

The company is considering some kind of memorial or mention for the dead bird during the television broadcast Friday, he added.

That's my favorite part.
